Use of Medical Terminology in Work Activities (WSQ)

This course aims to equip individuals working or planning to work in the health care environment. This course will prove to be very useful for people with limited or no medical training and intend to develop skills to communicate clearly and effectively using medical terminology.

This course will enable the participants to learn and understand medical terminology; spelling; pronunciation and definition of medical terms. The majority of medical terms are made up of interchangeable word parts that are used over and over again in different combinations. Participants will discover the connections and relationships among root words, prefixes and suffixes, as well as recognizing the individual parts.

This course has met the criteria set by the Workforce Development Agency and lessons follows the strict criteria including theory, formative and summative assessment in relation to the Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ framework. Singaporeans and PR will be able to enjoy a 90% funding for this course.



This course is designed for people working or wishing to work in healthcare environment and does not have adequate training in medical terminology.

It also aims to develop skills to communicate clearly and effectively with properl terminology to patients, healthcare staff and others.

1. Demonstrate understanding of the principles of medical terminology

• Build and analyse common medical terms including root words, prefix
and suffix
• Identify commonly used medical abbreviations
• Refer to appropriate sources when in doubt

2. Use appropriate medical terminology and acronyms in interactions with healthcare professionals

• Apply basic medical terminology in oral and written form
• Seek clarifications from appropriate healthcare professionals and
appropriate sources when unsure of terminology
• Understand and respond accordingly to organization's documents which
may contain basic medical terminology

3. Explain basic medical terminology and acronyms in interactions with patients and next-of-kin

• Engage patients or next of kin in communication according to
organisational procedures
• Explain simple medical terminology and abbreviations in simple terms
to patients or next-of-kin in according with organizational procedures

This course is designed for people working or wishing to work in healthcare environment or related industry with no medical training. It is relevant to

• Reception staff
• Administrative staff
• Clinic Assistant
• Healthcare Assistants
• Therapy Assistant
• Allied Health staff
• Support Services Staff
• Healthcare providers
• Non healthcare providers who are identified to be AED providers



Upon successful completion and assessment of the training module, participants will receive a formal recognition through the award of a Statement of Attainment (SOA)

This SOA is a nationally recognized qualification indicating the participant's ability or competence in a particular area. This means that the participant is certified by the WDA (Singapore Workforce Development Agency) as being able to perform a task appropriate to his/her occupational level and work demands. A minimum of 80% attendance by the participant is required for the WDA funding.
