News and Events
On 11 October 2017, staff and student volunteers of Parkway College went to The Bishan Home for the Disabled for an afternoon event of Art & Craft and Sing-along with the residents. Gift bags with contributed items were prepared for this meaningful and interactive event.
The residents gave our volunteers a warm welcome upon arrival at the activity hall. After enjoying the delicious snacks handed out, the residents were enthusiastic to do some fun Art & Craft activities. Together, the volunteers and residents made colourful sun flowers and water painting of the cut-outs of the shape of their hands. After that, a Sing-along was conducted. During the sing-along, some residents even invited students to dance by holding hands while the rest of the volunteers belted out famous evergreen hits in both English and Mandarin such as “甜蜜蜜“ and “The Moon Represents My Heart”.
The volunteers appreciated the heartwarming experience of interacting with the residents. Ru Ling from the Radiography programme commented, “I think this event is extremely helpful for the Year 1s during clinical (weeks) and I felt that this event was very meaningful as we really got to do something with the members from the home”. Siti Hafizah added “The event was a great exposure for us to learn about the Intellectually Disabled. It went smoothly and the residents seemed to enjoy themselves as much as we did”.
Parkway College looks forward to organising more charity events in future as the College believes that volunteering to help others is one of the most cherished acts of human kindness, with the aim to encourage everyone to give back to society and foster the spirit of volunteering.
