Parkway Education launches niche courses in Health Science to address issues of shortage of trained healthcare professionals and growing ageing population with increasing healthcare needs.

As the premier service provider of tertiary healthcare in Singapore and the region, ParkwayHealth is now embarking on the trail of also becoming a leader in healthcare professional education through its subsidiary, Parkway College. Within a short span of six months since its inception, Parkway College has established three Schools: Nursing, Allied Health and Healthcare Management. Together, these three schools will address the gamut of disciplines in the healthcare professional field.

In 2008, Parkway College (a subsidiary of Parkway Education) is offering eleven courses:

The Parkway College Diploma in Nursing will be the first nursing diploma course run by a private college in Singapore to receive accreditation by Singapore Nursing Board (SNB). Likewise, Parkway College courses in Clinical Governance (to be offered by the School of Allied Health) and Healthcare Management & Information Technology (to be offered by the School of Healthcare Management) are among the first to be offered in Singapore with a heavy focus on healthcare application. The difference is that Parkway College has the advantage of hospitals and facilities for practicum placement.

In healthcare education, Parkway College has the unparalleled backing of its hospitals, which will serve to provide valuable clinical practicum, attachments and internships for its courses. Parkway Hospitals’ specialist health professionals and administrators, doctors and nurses will be inducted to help with the teaching in the courses. Additionally, Parkway College is developing an international educational chain for its students through its linkages with universities in Australia, the UK and the US. This will enable students to pursue advanced degree studies in Singapore and abroad.

A review of the healthcare education field in Singapore makes it evident that Parkway College is catering to a hitherto unfulfilled need in healthcare education, through its 2008 offerings in nursing, allied health and healthcare management. Additionally, the College has plans to offer an even bigger slate of specialty courses in health sciences in 2009, to address the entire domain of the healthcare profession.

Parkway College will thereby provide unique student-centred, facilitator-led blended learning to its students. Parkway College is catering to the need for employment of healthcare professionals by Singapore hospitals, including the big demand from ParkwayHealth’s own hospitals in Singapore, Malaysia and the region. Graduates of our courses will hence be able to enhance their employment and career advancement opportunities in the fast growing healthcare environment.
